Two cheques totalling over £1,000 were recently donated to the Wells and Mendip Museum from the proceeds of local book ‘Big Shows: Charles Heal and Sons’ written by local history authors Richard Green of Wells and Guy Belshaw from Wellington.

Both Guy and Richard are Honorary Members of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain.

The book was launched at last year’s Wells May Charter Fair with the proceeds being spilt in half between the Wells Museum and the Fairground Heritage Trust Museum at Lifton in Devon.

Also adding towards the funds was a cheque from the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, donated at last year’s Opening Ceremony.

Recipients for the Wells Museum included Archivist Dr Julia Wood and Curator David Walker, for which Dr Julia Wood responded “Both the City Archives and Wells Museum are enormously appreciative of this generosity and support from Richard, Guy and the Showmen’s Guild”.

Big Shows: Charles Heal and Sons’ featured many items from the Wells City Archives and Wells Museum, with a few remaining copies still available from the Museum Shop, while there are plans for a hard back and expanded limited edition version due to be published on the famous Showman, businessman and philanthropist.

This year’s 819th Wells May Charter Fair is set for Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd May, with the Civic Opening Ceremony and Blessing of the Fair at 11am on the Saturday.
