Arthur Silcock opens again on home turf

It was good to see two of Arthur Silcock’s back-end fairs take place in his homeland of Hindley and Wigan this October after their cancellation last year due to Covid restrictions.

These were actually the second fairs of the season at these venues, less than four miles apart, after earlier presentations in May and June.

In Hindley, there was a nice balance of rides for families, older teenagers and adults, open from September 30 to October 9 on the Market Place.

Amongst the nine major attractions in attendance two were new to the town, the Meteor of Nathan Jones and Jordan Cowie’s Tagada. Making up the rest of the fair were 10 juveniles, three game stalls and three catering kiosks.

Over in Wigan, the fair was built up on the usual car park at the rear of the DW football ground and open for a 10-day period beginning October 14. Advertised on many posters, roadside boards and social media as Silcock’s Gigantic Fun Fair, all rides were just £1.50 each.

A charity event took place on Sunday. This was the seventh time that Silcock’s partnered with Blessing In Disguise to host a VIP Day when children with disabilities and life limiting illnesses were given two hours (11am-1pm) to enjoy the amusements at more accessible slow speeds.

New attractions included Baron & Macauley Hart’s Krazy Karz Dodgems. The Reverchon track was purchased earlier this year from Gerald Reeves. Joining this and also new to the Hart family was Macauley’s and Marissa Lock’s well-themed Jungle Fun House which was acquired in September from Nathan Hart.

A ride which has been in storage for a good number of years was David Hackett’s Top Spin, now the only one of its kind touring the UK fairground circuit.

Amongst the juvenile attractions, a notable newcomer Asa Holland’s Gold Rush coaster, new to him in July.
